saving ULV processors are becoming increasingly popular with a section of the users. They need computing on the move and do not mind sacrificing a bit of performance for added battery life. That explains why the major computer manufacturers like HP, Asus and Dell have started making ultraportable laptops with power saving CPUs. Dell’s latest Inspiron i1470-3282CRD is one such model that emphasizes on battery life more than performance.
However, the CPU used in the Inspiron i1470-3282CRD is a little more powerful. It is a Core 2 Duo SU7300 from the stable of Intel. Since it is a 14 inch laptop, the battery life that extends beyond 5 hours should be termed excellent. The design of this model is not too flashy but stylish to an extent. The LED backlit display is splendid in terms of picture clarity and color reproduction. Compared to the rivals like the Toshiba Satellite E105-S1802 and the HP Pavilion dv4-1555dx it feels lighter at just 4.6 pounds. The build quality is solid though. It comes loaded with Windows 7 home Premium.
The keyboard is ergonomic and the keys give nice tactile feedback. However, it does not come with backlighting. Its touchpad is intuitive and also offers gestures like the MacBooks. While the Inspiron 1470 lacks any dedicated media keys it offers some kind of media control with its function keys.
The brightness of the screen is adequate for viewing HD movies and it does not suffer from reflections much. Sound reproduction is an area where the Inspiron 1470 excels. The onboard Altec Lansing speakers give excellent sound output for entertainment and general usage. Unless you are very finicky about sound quality, you would not need a headphone with this model.
While the laptop features a HDMI port it misses out eSATA as well as FireWire. It has a DVD drive and WiFi functionality. The 320GB hard drive and 4GB of fast DDR3 memory makes it a decent performer though the CPU can not match the performance of mainstream dual core CPUs. The performance difference becomes noticeable in media encoding and image editing related tasks. Windows 7 runs smoothly on this laptop though the integrated Intel GMA 4500 graphics chip rules out hardcore gaming. This is not surprising as it is not a gaming laptop. Dell offers some interesting gaming laptops with its Alienware range. However, the laptop performs well in multitasking and applications do not seem sluggish while launching. Overall, it is ideal for running office applications and web browsers with light multimedia software thrown in.
What the laptop loses in performance, gains back in battery life. The ULV processor consumes much less power than conventional CPUs and the result is discernible. This model uses a standard battery with 6 cells and lasts more than 5 hours with it. This is impressive considering the battery life offered by other laptops in this range. Most of the other laptops with similar battery can not last beyond 3 hours. Dell offers a one year standard warranty with this model. The support documentation can be found at the Dell site.
